Clothes That Firefighters Wear

The most important functions of a firefighter’s uniform are to protect him from heat, flames and smoke, as well as to make him more visible both to other firefighters, and those trapped in a burning building or vehicle. This is achieved through the use of revolutionary materials such as Nomex and Kevlar. Striping is added to the clothing that is highly reflective so they can be easily seen.

The firefighters clothing starts on their head with a helmet and goggles, and a flap that protects their neck. The uniform is also called PPE, or Personal Protective Equipment. The firefighters jacket and pants both are called “turnouts” because they are turned inside out for storage, and to enable the firefighter to put them on quickly during an emergency. Made of materials like Nomex and Kevlar, they can withstand high temperatures, protecting the firefighter from burns and heat.

Underneath, he wears a cotton t-shirt, and suspenders to hold the insulated pants up. On his feet, it’s important for him to wear insulated rubber boots with steel toes. The jacket he wears is also insulated, and features highly reflective tape. Tape is used for better visibility, and sometimes color coding will be used as well, to identify the firefighter as a full time firefighter, a volunteer, or paramedic, and to provide knowledge of his rank within the fire department.

Firefighters will also wear a tank on their back, known as a “Self Contained Breathing Apparatus,” which provides them with 30 minutes of fresh air for use while they are inside of the burning building or vehicle. Sometimes, they will have a small bag around their waist that contains a rope. In most cases this is a 75 foot length of rope that can be used either for a search and rescue operation, or in a line helping occupants to escape.

In addition, there are usually hooks on the firefighters uniform so he is able to hook such apparatus as flashlights, a radio or a harness or pressure mask. He usually will also have a pair of leather gloves, all adding to the protective features of their clothing.

Firefighters clothing is essential to protect them from burns and smoke inhalation while doing their job. It keeps them safe, and able to breathe clean fresh air, so they can concentrate on the very difficult job at hand, that of extinguishing the flames, and rescuing people.
